About Ms. Petersen: Education, Background and Training

I earned my bachelor's degree in psychology in 1987 and my master's degree in social work in 2000, both from Indiana University. For five years, I worked with abuse and neglect issues in the child welfare system. During graduate school, I focused on child advocacy and working with children and adolescents through practicum experience at the I.U. School of Law's Child Advocacy Clinic and the Monroe County Community School Corporation. I achieved my license to practice independently (license no. 34004770A) in 2004. I opened my private practice in 2007.

For over twenty years I have worked as a counselor and therapist with children, adolescents and adults with a variety of issues including (but not limited to) the impact of trauma, anxiety, depression, performance enhancement, mental illness, relapse prevention, relationship issues, job and academic concerns and ADHD. My experience includes 8 years in community mental health where I provided crisis intervention, assessments, and group, individual and family therapy. I employ evidence-based interventions including cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, interpersonal, ego state therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR).

I have been utilizing EMDR for eleven years with a wide range of issues and am trained through the EMDR Institute, where the practice originated. Because so many of my clients found EMDR to be so effective, I decided to pursue additional education and consultation beyond level II and was granted status of Certified EMDR Therapist by the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) in January 2015. Part of the certification process included submitting letters of recommendation from supervisors and peers attesting to my professional ethics, competency and proficiency as an EMDR practitioner. Since then, I have maintained my certification  status by completing necessary  training every one to two years.

Providing competent care for you is important to me. I therefore regularly refer to pertinent texts and research, attend continuing education seminars and participate in consultation groups. I am a member of the National Association of Social Workers and the EMDR International Association.

In my spare time, I enjoy running with my dog, bicycling around the beautiful areas in Monroe County and working in my garden. I am the proud parent of two wonderful, intelligent and talented young adults.

I look forward to speaking with you!
